Flaine Off Piste Guiding & Adventures

Perfect for those who relish days in fresh powder fields. Are you are an intermediate to advanced skier or snowboarder keen to get off the beaten track? If so, join us for an off piste adventure. We offer private off piste guiding, off piste skills groups, and alpine touring groups in Flaine and surrounding areas of Les Carroz, Samoens, & Morillon. We can of course run private versions of all the groups we offer. Choose any green date in the booking calendar and let us know in the notes when you book online. For group lessons look for blue dates in the booking calendar .

We recommend choosing an appropriate ski for off piste skiing in Flaine. Use a ski that is 85mm wide underfoot or greater. Preferably as long as you are tall (approximately +/- 3cm). Please avoid using short and narrow skis off piste. While they may feel lovely on piste, they make skiing off piste much more difficult. Avalanche safety equipment is required, except for the level 1 skills group. Relax. These can be hired from us, and most rental shops. If you feel out of your depth, let us know, we are on hand to help.

Off Piste Adventures

Private guide & coach for 1 – 6 people. Our guided backcountry sessions offer a mixture of lift access & brief skinning (if desired), to access some of the incredible hidden off-piste descents that our mountains have to offer. Routes in Flaine, Les Carroz, Samoens, & Morillon are weather dependant and selected according to the prevailing conditions.

Ability: Intended for skiers that already have experience skiing off piste. To get the most from this session you should as a minimum, be able to link turns comfortably in soft un-groomed snow off-piste.

You’ll need transceiver, shovel, probe, and backpack (+water/food). If you would like to include skinning to access off piste routes please bring touring skis/binding, skins, and ski crampon.

Off Piste Skills 1

Off piste skiing requires a different technique to that used on groomed slopes. We know this can seem daunting but we are here to show you how to master the skills. Starting with practical explanations of how skis work when moving through soft snow. Followed by teaching you how many of the techniques you already know can be modified. After we have shown you how to move through varied snow conditions, we move into the fluffy stuff. Using small sections close to the piste we show you how to link those turns through off piste snow. We want to build your confidence in soft snow so will only take you on gradients that work with your skill level. That said, we know you’ll be back for Skills 2

Duration: 5hrs (2x 2.5hr Sessions AM/PM)

1 Hour lunch break allowing for continued Q/A & feedback with your coach.

Off Piste Skills 2

You’re already able to link turns off piste in varied snow conditions on gradients equivalent to blue terrain. Maybe you would like to ski more of the available off piste mountain terrain around Flaine? Off piste Skills 2 progresses from Off Piste Skills 1. So there is just a brief re-cap how the skis work in soft snow. We work to refine your technique according to your performance requirements and any goals you may have. We use a blend of on piste, and off piste drills. Drills and development are always prescriptive to the individual. This means that we often have a number of different circuits going at the same time during group lessons. Which allows individuals to progress at their own rate in a safe environment. Where appropriate, we will scale the level of terrain being skied to the individuals development and goals.

Alpine Touring FAQ

Fitness for ski touring? You dont need to be super fit, you need to be comfortable spending a few hours hill walking, at a relaxed pace.

Skill level? You dont need to be a high performing skier. For example, if you are a skier that can comfortably ski most pistes, and can can ski un-groomed snow at the side of the pistes. You have enough skill to join us for some ski touring.

Equipment?
You will need: ski touring skis/binding, skins, ski crampon, transceiver, shovel, probe, and rucksack (Don’t worry, when sessions start we will carry out a kit check and briefing). Most good ski rental shops around the Flaine area provide Alpine touring equipment as “ski randonnee” or “ski touring” packages.
